Protect
Yourself From
Bookkeeper Fraud
It is more common
than you may think!
-
Never
give
your
online
banking
information
to
anyone,
including
your
bookkeeper
or
accountant.
-
Never
leave
blank
signed cheques
with
staff
members.
It may
be more
convenient
to have
a supply
of
signed
cheques
in your
absence,
however
this
leaves
you wide
open to
fraud.
-
Never
give
your
bookkeeper
signing
authority
on your
bank
account.
-
It is a
good
practice
to
personally
review
your
bank
statement
every
month,
ask
questions
if there
are
payments
that you
don't
recognize.
Bookkeepers
can go
for
years
committing
fraud if
there is
no one
monitoring
them.
-
Separate
your
bookkeeping
and
accounting
roles.
Two sets
of eyes
reviewing
your
books provides
a good
system
of
checks
and
balances.
The
accountant
can
review
the
bookkeeper's
records
and vice
versa.
-
Match up
cheques
to a
supplier's
invoice.
If one
can't be
found,
start
asking
questions.
Make
sure you
know
where
the
money is
really
going.
Keep an
eye out
for
phony or
inflated
prices.
Matching
purchase
order
numbers
to
invoices
also
reduces
risk of
fraud.
-
Keep an
eye out
for
duplicate
cheques.
